what is an internship

What is an Internship?

An internship is an official program offered by an employer to potential employees. These potential employees are often referred to as Interns. They work either part time or full time at a company for a certain period of time. Internships are most popular with undergraduates or graduate students who work between one to four months and have a goal to gain practical work-related experience. An internship should give you practical skills, workplace experience and greater knowledge of that industry, in exchange for the employer benefiting from your work. (Often unpaid labor)

Why do you need to Intern?

As competition for jobs increases, students need to think of new ways to set themselves apart from all of the other equally qualified and skilled candidates. Job candidates who have relevant workplace experience tend to be more valued by employers, and this makes internships an attractive prospect. Getting an International Internship experience puts you in the top 2% of all job seekers.

Often time companies do extend full time job offers to exceptional interns, though this is not guaranteed and your objective to do an International internship program should not be focused around seeking full time employment at these companies. The work permit process is cumbersome takes time to process.

The best approach is to position yourself as a hardworking, reliable worker, proactive in your work, and eager to learn and volunteer for special projects. When a position does open up, you’ll be the first to be considered. Do keep in mind that the rolodex of contacts you take back and the people you impressed with your work ethics will be contacting you for a position or referring you to other employers.

An International internship stands out on a student’s resume and is among the best things a young person can do to prepare for the real world. The experience and the international contacts would be an asset for any employer, hence making you their first choice for full time employment.
